Funkadelic Vibes

The famous psychedelic funk band Funkadelic sings “free your mind and your ass will follow” and “freedom is free from the need to be free” (1970).

How might the vibe relate to these lyrics?

Each human body gives off a vibe. There are human bodies all across the globe.  Therefore, there is a global vibe.

Other bodies might also give off a vibe. Animal bodies. Tree bodies. Bee bodies. River, ocean, and mountain bodies. Star bodies. Galaxy bodies. Deceased bodies. Unseen bodies. Nonphysical bodies. And so on. If true, then perhaps there is a universal vibe.

If you can attune yourself to this vibe, then you can let go of your mind and allow your body, your vibe, the vibe to guide you to and from people, places, events, experiences, etc. Think: flow, peak experience, in the zone, martial arts, Bruce Lee, the way of the Samurai, Return of the Jedi, Jimi Hendrix, Taoism, live improvisational jazz, hiking in the old growth forest, mind blowing ecstatic sex, actors on stage executing the ultimate theatrical moment.

This is not a “law of attraction” since the law of attraction is based on “just believe it” or “just think it” and it will happen. Those are mental affirmations attractive for an individualistic consumer society. “I can have anything I want if I just want it bad enough.”

The vibe is different. The vibe is an embodied and collective phenomenon and works best when we are all vibing together. Think: sports fans or music fans vibing in their respective stadiums with the team or band. Electricity runs through the collective body. Funkadelic’s lyrics are therefore a call to collective action.

Free our minds and our asses will follow. Freedom is free from the need to be free.
